Cycling on St Helena is immensely fun, but little explored. The road network across the island is extensive, and varies in condition from tarmac to dirt track. There are also a number of off road routes that can be explored. Gradients in most places are challenging (sometimes upwards of 20%), though there are some locations across the middle of the island where flatter routes are available.
Unfortunately, due to the little explored nature of the cycling, there are no hire/repair facilities currently available. SA Airlink gives an additional 15kg allowance for certain sports equipment listed here, this gives you 35kg total. This can be pre-booked by emailing the following address customercare@flyairlink.com
There are a number of places on the island where cycling is currently prohibited for safety reasons, and discussions are currently underway to possibly see some of these restrictions lifted/relaxed. These restrictions are focused mainly around roads out of Jamestown, specifically:
(a) Longwood Road: between Two Gun Saddle and the Briars;
(b) Side Path and Napoleon Street: between the Briars and Main Street;
(c) Half Tree Hollow and Ladder Hill: between the Salvation Army Hall and China Lane;
(d) “W” Road: between Francis Plain Ridge Gate and White Gate.
The few cyclists currently on island ride mountain bikes using either mountain bike/hybrid style tyres. For the more technical it is beneficial to have a 34T rear cassette to help with the climbing. It is possible to use a road bike, however the surface of the roads and the loose grit mean it is not advisable.
