As as traveller you are used to hiring cars. But whether you prefer Hertz, Avis, Budget or some other company, don’t bother trying to book your St Helena car from them. All car hire on St Helena is done by small local businesses, and even by individuals.
The first, and by far the most important rule, and also one that will not come naturally to you at first so you will need to practice, is that you must wave at every passing driver or pedestrian you encounter. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know who they are, and they will not have no idea who you are either. Always wave. This is an absolute and must be obeyed, even if you ignore every other rule of the road.
